Wednesday, December 22, 2004 The wonderful thing about being on standby is that there's nothing to do but wait. So when I reach camp, I take over equipment, perform routine duties, then I'm free to play games, sleep, read, and chat with my teammates. The awful thing about being on standby is that I have to be in camp. I've missed so many outings with friends and family. A friend of mine wondered why I was absent from so many class outings. She thought I was purposely absenting myself. I can only shake my head and sigh. Despite it being the festive season, I feel no cheer whatsoever. I feel drained and I cannot summon the energy to do anything. I snap at people for the smallest things (so it's a blessing actually that I can't make it for the outings, haha). Of course, I'm not the only person who sacrifices weekends for work. Bus drivers, shop assistants, and many other people work weekends and public holidays. The difference between me and them is, they get overtime pay and I don't. Not that money can make up for the lost time, but at least it soothes the pain. Still, for what it's worth, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, everyone.
