For the first time in my life, I'm really really worried about my mom. Because for the first time in her life, she is in hospital for an op. Her constitution is very frail, but that has never meant much to me until now. Even though it is a minor operation, there are so many things that can go wrong. What if she reacts badly to the anaesthesia? What if her anaemia causes complications? What if something else goes wrong?

I was going to offer an incense to Guanyin and pray for my mom's safety, but as I walked out of my room I see my dad on the couch and incense already lit on the altar. I asked him why he woke up early and he muttered something about buying things from the market. Then he asked why I woke up early and I muttered something about phlegm and my sore throat. I really am a chip off the old block.

One major thing I'm learning on this trip is the importance of suffering in silence. At times. For a while I was thinking that I need to be assertive, even aggressive, or be taken advantage of. But sometimes, being loud and opinionated and complaining comes across as being rude, argumentative and whining. There are times when it's better to just swallow things down and keep it quiet. It's something I'll have to get the balance of before people start forming negative impressions of me, because things have been pretty rough and I've been shooting my mouth off quite a bit. =(

Hanging out in Phoenix, Arizona right now. Work is tough but things are simple, and it's almost like life is at a limbo while I'm overseas. Of course, it'll all come crashing down when I get back, but for now I'm just going with the flow and enjoying the simple life. No need to worry about anything but what's immediately before me. Just gotta remember to do the laundry before I run out of clothes.

And I think I've missed a few opportunities here and there to fulfil one of my life's objectives, but I'm pretty cool about it these days. 宁缺勿烂 is something I'm going to stick to, and I'm still pretty confident that the right opportunity will present itself in time. Meanwhile I'll just keep improving myself and preparing to take it firmly with both hands when it comes.

Happy Lunar New Year in advance, because I know I'm going to be busy on the eve tomorrow. Mum is falling sick from exhaustion, so the rest of the family's gotta pitch in and get things done.

The coming lunar year of the Rabbit is going to be a year of changes: changing work project, changing main workplace, changing bosses, first long overseas trip since university and, with the foretelling of good romantic luck for all Rats, maybe hopefully a change in relationship status! There really isn't time nor incentive to blog much any more. I find it really hard to put thoughts into words, especially in a form that is coherent to other people. So writing a good post can be the result of an hour or more of work. Besides at our age it is no longer acceptable to just blurt out whatever comes to mind. This post has taken 20 minutes already.

And I'm always wondering, what's the point of posting? Who reads this any more? Two and a half years of lying fallow means that whatever audience I once had should have all melted away. Especially as everyone around me grows up and stop blogging and following blogs themselves. What's the point of posting this very post?

This blog has been many things to me. It started out as a way to express things that I had no one to say to, when I was stuck in the army and had no close friends around. It then became a way for distant friends and not-so-distant friends to keep in touch. It was, and still is, an emotional outlet for me to let off steam. And I've been posting comics because I don't want this blog to just be full of sad posts. Life has been tough for a while but hopefully things will pick up from now onwards.

Why did I say so much all of a sudden? Because I've been thinking of reviving this, to be honest. Because I'm ~~losing~~ have lost touch with a lot of people, and I hope to reconnect somehow. This worked through the university years so I'm hoping it'll work again now.

It's not that I have nothing to say. Not like I underwent a lobotomy and am only left with my cerebellum. Not like I have lost all emotions, thoughts and the means to express them. And, unlike some lucky person, I have not found anyone willing to listen to all my drivel (no, not saying that yours is drivel. The drivel's all mine. But the listening ear is all yours, heh).

But writing is very dependent on two conditions being fulfilled in tandem. One being the urge to write, the other being the availability of the writing medium. The times when my brain is most absorbed in self-reflection are usually times where I'm nowhere near any writing material: in the shower, on the bus or train, while walking or running. And what does it matter, whatever I post here? And who reads it anyway? Only digital arachnids, for all I know.

So why am I posting this? Because I have exactly 15 minutes to burn, I guess. Not enough to do anything else. And after holing up at home for the entire long weekend, somehow even the possibility of communicating with someone is alluring enough to move me to dance out with my fingers the steps that I've been mulling on the way to work this morning.

Blogging is like shouting out to the vast, featureless sea and hoping for an echo. Now I'm going to cup my ears, lean out a little way, and listen intently for a while.

Every time I think that I'm in control, that I'm just peering over the edge to see what's beneath, next thing I know I'm plummeting through the air wondering what happened. Will it end with a splat this time round, too, I wonder. I'm like Wile E Coyote, with so much misplaced self-confidence, trying but always failing to catch the Road Runner. Mercilessly resurrected scene after scene, forever spurred on by the pen of the scriptwriter, time after time ending with a bang or splat or squish or BOOM. Surely, at least once, it must have crossed his mind, 'Enough. Just let me be, and let him be.' But he is stuck in the eternal cycle of failure. Am I similarly condemned? Is my life being recorded and subsequently chopped into vignettes for the amusement of the gods?

Whoo, it's been such a long time since I've written like that. Despite my best efforts, colour is slowly forcing its way into my monochromatic existence. The thing is, that colour is mostly grey. Well done.

This blog has lain dormant for so long, that I feel obliged to post something. But what is there to say?

I'm reasonably happy at work. I'm in a great project team, they might not be the most capable people but everyone tries hard and are really tolerant with my occasional nonsense.

I'm reasonably happy in life. Family is harmonious and everyone's doing well. I'm active enough socially, even though there are still a lot of friends I want to meet but haven't. I'm horribly unfit but I'm taking steps to address that (since my IPPT window is closing soon). I still manage badminton one or two weeknights a week, and I just got a nice tan from one full weekend of kayaking. Love life? I could write reams about it yet it all doesn't matter. I'm just going to go with the flow on this (even though 'the flow' has a habit of dumping me onto rocks).

Hopefully this post will keep the loyal readers (thank you, thank you) happy for a while. Now I'm heading out to meet friends, play board games and watch soccer. =)

As I settle back into a monochromatic existence, once the last of the colours drain out of me and I can once more think objectively, I am actually glad that I had allowed the colours to come in at the start. I had nearly forgotten what it was like to see, nay, to experience the world awash in brilliant hues. This time round it really was a fair and equivalent exchange; the ups were really up (the Japanese got it right with their use of kanji: 最高 saikou) and the downs were quite down, but rollercoasters end where they begin (usually).

But I think I've had my fill of rollercoasters and kaleidoscopes for now, let me go back and hide in my fortress of greys for a while.

I am being rash, and I'm being selfish. Barging my way through without caring about anything or anybody. Oh how I must look to all the others! How they must gossip and whisper and wonder, how is this all going to end? I've always done pretty much what I liked, and I've always thought that everyone, myself included, is perfectly entitled to pursue happiness with all their might. But this isn't just about me, it's not just my happiness that is at stake here. So I'm going to take my foot off the pedal a bit, and wait for a sign. If this is as far as I can go, then I'm just going be thankful for what I have. If there's some more road to travel, then I hope I've got what it takes to go all the way.

Touching, meaningful and beautiful, Makoto Shinkai explores the theme of distance between people in this one-hour animated film comprising three episodes. I see a bit of myself in the male protagonist, and I sort of understand what he's searching for. Maybe I'm searching for the same thing, myself. I highly recommend this movie to everyone.

A lot of people treat internet forum threads as rooms where anyone can get onto a soapbox and shout whatever they want to, as long as it is on topic. So I see a lot of unfortunate examples where thus mistaken people waltz into a thread with a title like "I love ****" and make a post like: "I don't understand why anyone could like this SHIT, It's BORING and UGLY and SUX and the creator should be fed to the lions." What then follows is page after page of venom that linger on to poison the eyes of poor people like me who read the entire thread from start to end.

People should get it into their heads that forum threads are like conversations. Not only does it have a topic, but it's usually headed in a specific direction. If you're going to be an ass and disrupt the conversation, then no matter what happens to you as a result, you had it coming.

A lot of little things went wrong today.. Here's hoping I don't return to work tomorrow to find that the big ones went wrong too. This was definitely one of those days when I should have just hid under my blanket and not come out for anything. Well, had a lot of good conversations today, so I guess that evens things out.

I guess, on the whole, today was pretty ok. However way too many small things went wrong such that I'm left with a profound sense of dissatisfaction with myself and the way things have gone today. Somehow I'm falling into my old pattern stumbling through life without paying any attention to what's happening around me, and all too soon I know I'm going to confronted by something bad that I should have long ago seen coming and avoided.

Sadly awareness of problem != awareness of how to solve it.
